Recently we made a few changes to my eldest son’s bedroom, so I’m sharing it today for anyone in need of some ideas for updating a teen bedroom.

The bedroom was last updated a few years ago when we went for a loft inspired look: brick wallpaper, black walls, industrial touches. It’s the smallest of our 3 bedrooms and although not a tiny box room, it isn’t overly generous. It felt a bit stuck in the mid-teens and I wanted to make a few changes to give it a slightly more sophisticated and smarter look; somewhere cosy and calm where he would be able to relax and get a bit of peace away from the rest of the family!

Let’s have a look at what has changed in here:

Wall Colour

Luckily for me my son is easy going and gave me free reign with his room. However, he still liked the brick wallpaper, so we’ve kept that for now (I might persuade him to let me paint over it at some point!) The two remaining walls which It is quite an earthy taupe kind of shade and provides a softer backdrop to his room than the black walls did. I’m actually surprised about how much roomier the space feels now… It seems that lifting the walls a few shades has opened it up – it definitely feels a bit wider than before!

Statement Pendant Light

Poor Alex has had a broken ceiling light for a little while, so was relying on lamps in the interim. So I was delighted to be contacted by The Soho Lighting Company, who offered us the chance to feature one of their sensational hand painted pendant lights. I was particularly drawn to the matt black ones as I thought they would work perfectly in the bedroom and become one of the key features of the room.

With a stunning vintage appearance, the Portland Bedroom and Hallway Pendant Light had it all. With its reclaimed industrial vibes, it certainly makes a statement. The large pendant has a smooth matt black exterior, whilst inside it is finished in an enamel style off-white. It is such a beautiful and timeless light that you could incorporate it in a period property or a more contemporary one. It’s versatile enough to hang in a bedroom, a hallway, over a dining table or breakfast bar and comes in 10 different colours.

We could not be happier with the light fitting – it looks stunning and provides the ultimate finishing touch in my son’s new look room.

Furniture

There’s a built in cupboard in this bedroom which is handy for storage, but after making do with a hanging rail and chest of drawers, I knew Alex really needed a wardrobe. I shopped around and opted for a smart and affordable one from Ikea. It is this Rakkestad 2 door wardrobe in black-brown. It comes with one shelf, but you can order an extra one too, which I did.

Also recently we upcycled a small set of drawers, which is a handy bit of extra storage – ideal for toiletries ad small stuff. I put a round black mirror above the drawer set so it’s like a little vanity unit.

Bedding

The striped bedding is from H&M, I love the beige and black stripe as it’s bold but neutral, too.

Accessories

The faux mini succulents and real Dragon tree plant are from Homebase. Other things we still need to get include a very compact desk to put next to the wardrobe and the room could do with a new window blind. I’ll share these future updates when we have them!
